Duncan Fallowell: Journals stored away like a squirrel's nuts

What does the hard-copy residue of a creative life look like? See below. Duncan Fallowell's notebooks, his unpublished journals - packed with anecdotes and observation - presumably the basis of his many books (travel, fiction, celebrity journalism) - have been placed in a safe deposit box in a bank for posterity. Duncan has lived and lives a 'rich and varied' life - the dozens of journals are proof of that alone. What will happen to them eventually? he asks. Madame suggests: 'A foreign university may buy them, I guess, after he's discovered whether the science textbook writers were right. Or not. About life everlasting. Not that the uni will know.'

  2. Dear Madame

Thank-you very much for your interest. I'd like to point out however that these journals were on the whole not the basis for books - all that material is in other files - but exist in their own right as a more intimate record in parallel to my published work.

    With best wishes, Duncan Fallowell

  3. How fascinating. Can't we have a short extract from these journals. Seems a pity to hide them away where they will be forgotten and unloved.

Stephen Hayter who once owned the Embassy Club in Mayfair kept his press clippings in a Swiss bank vault.

I thought bank deposit boxes were disappearing. Duncan would do well to keep an eye on his bank.

  7. Harrods do a box for £250 per year - but weren't they burgled a few years ago? Fortunately foreign criminal gangs can't read and would pass on to the diamonds

  8. I presume these contain a lot about his personal relationships and sexual adventures. Will Duncan be publishing a book from them? Or reading from them - he has a great voice

  9. DF should put together an anthology of excerpts from his diaries with illustrations. It would be a delightful Christmas present.

  10. It's not for Duncan to tell us he's having a rich and varied life. Very boastful, i say

  13. Isn't it time DF got an MBE or something? He's done more to get people travelling than most and to use their minds and senses. i shall write to HM and see what happens. i see you're no friend of my friend the PM.

  14. Why isn't Duncan F with a publisher like Penguin? His books are hard to find.

  15. Hard to find if you're plodding about in shops. Just go to Amazon and click something, Hey presto!

    Goodbye shops.

  23. Marvellous redecration of the site, madame. It now resembles the Victorian opium den-cum-knocking shop that it is. Anyone got a light?

  24. Fallowell once did a very funny interview with Vanessa Redgrave. Was that for Woman's Journal?

  25. Pretty certain it was for WJ. He did an amazing one with Germaine Greer for WJ, and Regine - is she still alive? Funny how people disappear.

  26. Régine! The 1980s incarnate! But she was too crude-snob to succeed in London - where she failed twice and still doesn't understand why. Crude-snob never works in London. Talking of the 80s, fun piece on Lady Colin Campbell by Lady Lynn Barber in the Sunday Times today. You should do something, Madame A, on Lady CC's two adopted Russian sons.

  27. Ah Georgie Campbell, I know her of old. Now runs the Dynasty publisher. Her sons must have pubes now. We'll see what comes my way.

Lynn Barber still churning it out is she.
