Ronnie Kray: The Sun repeats 'fat poof lies and rubbish'

"East End gangster Ronnie Kray confessed to being bisexual in secret recordings," reports The Sun. The story is not Kray's bisexuality but the recording itself - the property of writer Robin McGibbon whose book The Krays: Their Life Behind Bars was released last month.

The report ends with: "[Kray] shot dead fellow gangster George Cornell in an East End pub after being called a 'fat poof'." Not according to McGibbon's taped interview with the psycho which you can listen to here. After McGibbon prompts the subject with: "A lot of lies have been told about the Cornell thing...", Kray replies: "[Cornell] never called me a poof in his life, I'd have killed him then and there. Lies and rubbish." Kray killed him for other reasons to do with threats - I'm inclined to believe this.

Pity the churnalistic Sun didn't bother to listen to the tape.

Some nice homophobic comments from Sun readers to this story. Rupert Murdoch will be pleased.

Nonetheless he was a fat poof in funky parlance

Ronnie sounds like your average newspaper editor, but with sharper wits.

Is Rob McGibbon also Robin McGibbon or are they two people? I know Rob's father is/was called Robin, but that doesn't resolve the matter. Sort it!

None of this is news. I first heard about the tape in 2008. McGibbon's beewn phoning his pals in 'Fleet St' begging for publicity. I doubt his book has sold 100 copies, the pompous cunt.

I much prefer it when madame confines herself to books. Did I mention mine?

Since Ronnie murdered Cornell any way, and admits he'd have killed him had be called him a fat poof, isn't it a bit pointless to argue over what aggravated the Kray in the first place? More probably, Cornell called him a fat poof and threatened him.

Robin McGibbon was a former collaborator of the esteemed London publisher John Blake, producer of 'Serial Killers: Up Close and Very Personal' and other such weighty titles- so he knows his stuff. Ronnie was a bender but was he fat or just well built?

Ah, John Blake, the publishing pioneer who pre-dates phone hacking but not necessarily other excesses of tabloid culture, bless him.

Rob McGibbon tells me that Robin McGibbon is his dad, the Krays specialist. Still, it must be annoying to read the Sun repeating the fat poof line when Ronnie denied it - simply because the paper didn't bother to listen to the tape. I also see it didn't mention the title of the book. Tsk.

Is being a 'fat poof' somehow more shameful than being a murderous thug?

An excellent question.

Whether Ronnie Kray was fat or well-built or whatever, he was a very sexy fella
