"My husband would kill to defend our family... so why has Munir Hussain been jailed for protecting his?" screams the front page headline in today's Mail for a piece by the divine columnist Allison Pearson. Husband? It is certainly true that she lives with the New Yorker writer Anthony Lane, but are they now married? In the piece itself she refers to Anthony only as "Himself": plainly the editor is trying to sell us a line about Allison's moral authority.
Was it two years ago that Madame Arcati broke the story that she and Ant are not in fact bolted together in holy wedlock despite her then claims to the contrary? - click here. They may have married since of course in which case why was I not invited to the wedding? I have a splendid hat for such occasions - and a crystal ball. But for the sake of the headline writer, and the Mail's legendary integrity and moral uprightness, I hope that they are now a proper Mr and Mrs.
I understand that attempts by readers to remind the paper of Allison's marital status have gone ignored by the Mail's website. It must be due to the snow.

But wasn't she shrieking in her column last week that 'Batty Hatty' is wrong because 'MARRIAGE IS A BIG DEAL'? How confusing for Mail readers to be preached at by the unconverted... Is she dropping hints to her live-in lover and hoping for a Christmas proposal, I wonder?
Perhaps Allison and Anthony would like a joint wedding with Molly Parkin and me - it would be a most fascinating foursome.
You appear to be right, madame. Quite shocking!
Shocking? I'd say it's just the average level of hypocrisy and contempt for the truth that the DM displays on a daily -- nay, hourly -- basis. I mean, really, why NOT have a divorced columnist who is raising children with her live-in 'boyfriend' preach the virtues of marriage? The suckers, sorry readers, won't even know!
The DM really is a shocker but you have to admit it has the best graphics and layout of any tabloid. Pity about the content but do they do give good show-biz.
There's some truth is that. I love it when Alison Boshoff, 67, is ordered to torture (remotely) a celeb subject, with innuendo, rhetorical questions (accusations really) and dug up dirt. Though the Mail is profoundly homophobic, it is actually old-fashionedly and culturally gay in its style of response - acidic, arch, total and screamy. Paul Dacre would make an excellent old queen in his leathers down at the Coleherne, spitting out one-liners at the karaoke. Baz lugs his huge carcass about with his shoulder bag ready with a loving testimonial for a reciprocating PR - not sure the result is worth the effort.
I can say with confidence that Roger Lewis' book reviews are a joy and the paper's long gossipy celebrity features usually worth a peruse. ALL of the female columnists I would decapitate in Tudor fashion.
The Coleherne shut last year. Get with it, dear.
Oh I know, but everyone's heard of the Coleherne - it's legendary, call it comic licence.
Good grief. Why wasn't The Colherne listed by the National Trust ?. A disgrace.
Ouch. But serves the bitch right. Can we start lobbying No 10 to shut down the bullies at the Daily Wail? Your Andy Coulson tirades certainly worked.
The Daily Mail makes too much money alas, thanks in part to DMGT dumping many of its companies.
According to his Wikipedia entry, Anthony Lane is not married!!!
According to her Wikipedia entry, she is married to a Mr Pearson but lives with Anthony Lane and they have two children. How complicated.
Does that mean she is an adulteress and a liar? I don't know.
