Eagleton is being held to his statutory retirement age - unlike the Nobel-winning scientists etc - as part of an efficiency drive to pay off some huge debt. I guess Martin Amis' £80,000 wouldn't have made too much of a difference, anyway. It's only, as I recall, a quarter of the stated debt.

Seems cheap to me. We had to have a surveyor visit our house recently to do with a re-mortgage. He was here all of 15 minutes. It cost £1,400.
