'The paper run by deluded white toffs'

Arcati, I'm growing increasingly bored with the dead-tree press. Why in 2009 is the industry still run by deluded white toffs? The worst offender is the Grauniad which also employs token "ethnic" writers who are given picture bylines to prove their non-whiteness and then assigned to write embarrassing and condescending drivel about The Black Woman's View and The Muslim Perspective. I'm sick of it all Madame. And the Evening Standard is the most hideous of the bunch!
John Sleet

Dear John,
Just don't buy the papers, simple as that. I don't know of any paper that reflects my perspective or interests beyond certain individual writers such as Germaine Greer; and the Indy's Johann Hari is starting to improve with age. The Guardian is now the upscale Hello! of the "qualities" and the Standard has always been the Daily Tatler run in the main by neurotic snobs hankering after a life upgrade.

Who is this horrible racist Sleet? The press is not run by deluded white toffs but by the middle class. Why? Because the middle class can speak and read and write properly.

I can't see any racism in Sleet's comment. I'd like to stand up for the lower classes and remind Anonymous that they can also speak, read and write properly.

The Guardian is obviously run by Oxbridge whites - the whole paper stinks of secular snobbery and the Saturday edition really is like a celebrity magazine. There's also the huge smugness of the paper, it's full of itself as are many of its writers.

I don’t read the paper. I’d rather watch TV to get the quick (sensationalistic) version, listen to the radio for briefs, browse the internet for the biased opinions and then try to make sense of it all. When I want to know what is really happening in the world I talk to friends, family and co-workers (MY world, see?) and I read bestseller books, because then you can get a feel for what we as a society are seeking (this can be very disappointing; I frequently find myself not-fitting because I can’t make sense of what all the rave for a particular title is about).

But, who buys the newspapers? Is John Sleet inferring that those who spend their money on them are all a bunch of twits? People that bother to read are not as easily influenced as the guy that plops his fanny on the couch every evening after dinner for three hours flexing his thumb on the remote. Whoever is writing in the newspapers has a target audience and the companies that buy ads in those newspapers agree with their demographics, because we know that is not readership that covers the costs and yields profits (it has been that way for more than 150 years). If and when they are doing something wrong, they quickly suffer the consequences: they go under.

Token ethnic writers? Ethnic groups would see right through the scheme, John Sleet. We are just as good as whites at spotting fakes; there is no need to protect us (as we say where I come from: while you are on your way there, we are already on our way back – look it up; I’m not going to explain it).
